I was so eager to get into the air that I did not look closely at the retract pressure gauge. You notice one wheel is very slow to go up, and it was this that alerted me, a bit late though once airborne.
So after a nice flight what I expected happened, one wheel would not lock down.
Fortunately the VQ P-40 is so stable you can slow it down to almost a standstill, which I did on the flair, and no harm was done.

I also have the VQ 109 and it is a real nice flyer. Goes together simply with no real gotha's.
Very stable and easy to land.
Retracts are a must for smooth performance, and use air if you can, the mechanicals I find too fiddly to get right and always seem to need attention.
